How Dental Insurance Works
Most people have PPO dental insurance plans, which allow you to visit any licensed dentist and still use your benefits. In general, PPO coverage works something like this:
- Preventive care: 80 % - 100% covered
- Basic services (like fillings and non-routine X-rays): 50% - 80% covered
- Major services (crowns, root canals, etc.): 50% covered
Most dental insurance plans also include a deductible (an amount you must pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in) and an annual maximum (the most that insurance will pay out for approved services within a calendar year). If you ever have any questions about the specifics of your policy, our team will be happy help you figure out the fine print so you can use your coverage with confidence.
What Is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?
Dental insurance has a strong focus on prevention, and its coverage is specific to services that benefit a patient’s oral health. Sometimes, you may be able to use your medical insurance for dental procedures, but only for major or emergency services. For example, a medical policy might cover dental implant placement surgery or emergency care to handle a severe oral infection. Medical insurance does not basic services like cleanings and routine dental exams.
In-Network Vs. Out of Network
Whether our practice is in-network with your policy or not, we’ll be happy to help you figure out how to use your coverage to your greatest benefit.
The term “in-network” simply means that a dental practice has a contract with an insurance company that keeps costs low for both patients and the insurance provider. Oftentimes, insurance coverage rates are slightly higher at in-network practices.
We are proud to be in-network with all of the following plans:
- BlueCross BlueShield
- United Concordia
- Delta Dental
Out of Network
If you love the excellent care we provide in our practice, but we are not in your insurance’s network, that doesn’t mean you have to search for a different dentist. You are still welcome to use your PPO policy in our office to significantly lower your out of pocket costs. We’ll work with you to help you understand how your coverage applies so you won’t have any unpleasant surprises when the time comes to pay for your services.
